As the Manager of Engineering you will be responsible for:
* Leading engineering team in design, development and rollout of Big Data systems and services
* Partnering with system architects, functional managers and program managers to deliver to market mission critical data systems
* Developing new and enhance existing features for collection of massively distributed data systems owned by DDE group
* Working on data collection, processing and access subsystems
* Working on performance-critical message brokering subsystems
* Working on projects that focus on system scalability, performance, and security
* Following SW development methodology best practices
* Managing team priorities, effectively communicate status of committed projects
* Leading by example; mentor, coach and develop career of team members
* Inspiring and enable innovation, help team members to achieve their full potential

About the Team:
The Distributed Data Engineering team (DDE) develops, deploys and operates systems and services that collect, process, and store data about every business transaction that is executed by Akamai Edge services. Data owned by DDE is being consumed for the purposes of customer billing, customer analytics, business decisions support, Akamai’s cost structure management and Akamai’s network management. DDE currently collects over 7PB of data/day and maintains a data store that processes 3 trillion records daily. The product development team within DDE has end-to-end responsibility for the design, development and deployment of the platform components that enable one of the world’s largest cloud-based data systems.

Required Education and Experience:
Applicants must meet one of the following education and experience requirements:
* 8 years of relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree or
* 6 years of relevant experience and a Master’s degree or
* 3 years of relevant experience and a PhD or
* Equivalent professional experience

Basic Qualifications:
* 8+ years experience in design and development of distributed systems
* 8+ years experience developing software with C/C++ or Java
* 2+ years experience leading/managing successful software engineering teams

Desired Qualifications:
* Experience with Big Data systems and principles 
* Experience with DBMS 
* Experience with scripting (Python, bash, etc) and RESTful API
* Knowledge of networking principles and protocols
* Knowledge of software development and design principles
* Ability to troubleshoot complex network problems and customer issues
